The desktop version, Hemingway App, is available for a one-time payment of 19.99. The creators have indicated they intend to keep it this way. I just wish there were different sections for this site. The application enables users to improve the online text by modifying passive voice, adverbs and complicated words. The online version of Hemingway Editor is completely free. I love that it highlights sentences because then I'm constantly revising and editing. I think the site really helps with passive and active voice. Yes, my paper will be a little more difficult for a sixth grader to understand, but not for college students. My paper is subjected to an audience that has had years of English and grammar classes. I'm a college student and I'm constantly putting in my papers and my complex sentences and words are being told that they're too hard to read.
It is a powerful tool, given that it's free, though we would still recommend the Hemingway Editor over this one when it comes to free proofreading software. While Hemingway Editor may seem to appeal to everyone, it really only appeals to elementary school through middle school. Slick Write is a free software, similar to the Hemingway Editor app, that checks your writing for style and grammatical mistakes.
